Washington/New Delhi,  The US welcomed the opening of the Kartarpur corridor, terming it as a “step towards promoting greater religious freedom”.

The US State Department said in a tweet that it “welcomes the opening of a new border crossing between #India & #Pakistan, the Kartarpur corridor.

“This corridor is a step towards promoting greater #religiousfreedom. Best wishes to the pilgrims making the crossing for the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak’s birth,” State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said.

The cross-border Kartarpur corridor was inaugurated on Saturday to mark the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism. The corridor connects the Dera Baba Nanak Gurdwara in Indian Punjab to the revered Kartarpur Gurdwara in Pakistan.
