Paswan meets SC/ST MPs to discuss quota in promotions

New Delhi: Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Ram Vilas Paswan talks to the media at Parliament during the Budget Session, in New Delhi on Feb 10, 2020.

New Delhi,  Amid opposition’s demand for reservation in promotions for SCs, STs and the OBCs in government jobs, Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party founder Ram Vilas Paswan on Monday met with more than 50 MPs belonging to SC and ST communities at his residence here.

Six Union Ministers, including Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot, were also present during the meeting. MPs cutting across party lines attended the meeting.

Sources said that the MPs will form a future strategy into the matter following the decision of the Supreme Court.

Last week, a two-judge bench of the top court ruled the states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments. Also, there is no fundamental right to claim quota in promotions.

Earlier in the day, Gehlot told Rajya Sabha that the central government is committed to the welfare of people from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC).
