Govt keeping close watch on coronavirus impact: Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman

New Delhi,  The government is keeping a close watch on the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the Indian economy, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman said on Wednesday.

The government is “closely monitoring” the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the economy, she said during a meeting of the heads of the PSU banks.

Over 2,700 people have died due to novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), which broke out in China’s Wuhan, while the number of those infected is around 80,000.

Earlier, the Finance Ministry invoked Force Majure clause to address the issue of contractors going in default of contract obligations on account of delays in input shipments from China on account of coronavirus. “Coronavirus should be considered as a case of natural calamity and Force Majure clause (FMC) may be invoked wherever considered appropriate following due procedure,” it had said.
